History

In the past, when amethyst was still rare, the material value of the stone was equal to that of diamonds.

Since ancient times, the amethyst has been considered a stone that moderates improper behavior and promotes a clear mind and spirituality.

The ancient Greek name Amethystos translates to "not intoxicated", referencing its power to prevent the holder from intoxication. Therefore, the Greeks and also Romans liked to drink their red wine from amethyst cups.

The amethyst has always been associated with spirituality, mental clarity, awareness and concentration. Ring stones of bishops and cardinals were preferred from amethyst. The Hebrew word for amethyst translates to "dream stone", becaue Jews believed the crystal influenced dreams. Buddhist monks also preferred to use this crystal for their malas.

Leonardo da Vinci attributed the amethyst to the ability to dispel bad thoughts and to sharpen the mind.

Hildegard von Bingen recommended amethysts to clear up skin problems, to ward off lice and parasites, and against spider and snake bites.

Royal Houses all around the world preferred the color purple and amethysts for their crowns and jewelry.

Today the amethyst is one of the best-researched healing stones with a wide range of possible uses.
